I’m Florian Motlik, an independent AWS consultant based in Vienna, Austria. With over 15 years of experience building cloud infrastructure, I help teams design, implement, and optimize their AWS environments.

My Journey

My path to AWS consulting started with a deep dive into developer tooling and infrastructure automation.

Codeship (Co-founder & CTO)

As co-founder and CTO of Codeship, I built one of the pioneering CI/CD platforms. This experience taught me what it takes to build reliable, scalable infrastructure that developers actually want to use. I worked with hundreds of teams to optimize their deployment pipelines and saw firsthand the challenges organizations face when scaling their infrastructure.

Serverless Framework

I led the Serverless Framework through its 1.0 release, managing a complete rewrite while coordinating an active open-source community. This project deepened my expertise in serverless architectures and event-driven design patterns that are now central to modern AWS development.

Independent Consulting

Since 2017, I’ve been working as an independent AWS consultant, helping organizations across Europe and the US build better cloud infrastructure. My clients range from fast-moving startups to established enterprises navigating complex compliance requirements.

What Drives Me

I believe infrastructure should be:

  • Automated - Manual processes don’t scale and introduce human error
  • Consistent - Every environment should behave the same way
  • Secure by default - Security shouldn’t be an afterthought
  • Documented - Infrastructure as Code is also documentation

I’m passionate about helping teams build infrastructure they can understand, maintain, and evolve. That means not just implementing solutions, but ensuring your team can own and operate them after I’m gone.

Open Source

I maintain several open-source AWS tools at github.com/theserverlessway, including:

  • AWS Baseline - Enterprise AWS organization baseline
  • AWSinfo - Bash-based AWS information tool
  • Formica - CloudFormation deployment tool

These projects reflect my belief that good tooling should make complex tasks simple and repetitive tasks automated.

Beyond Work

I live close to Vienna in the Austrian countryside, which I thoroughly enjoy. When I’m not building infrastructure, you’ll find me spending time with my three daughters, contributing to my local community as part of local government, or recording episodes of the AWS News Weekly podcast.
